Let’s Make Empathy Great Again

Thursday, April 27, 2023

We don’t always know what someone else is going through. Not the person who sits next to us at a traffic light. Not the person who is in line at the cash register. Not our neighbor or our social media friends and family.

Sometimes we don’t know what the person closest to us is going through … even when we know everything they are going through, if you know what I mean. Sometimes we know the external circumstances but we don’t know the internal stresses or fears or thoughts.

Today I brought something up with my husband that was on my mind and I knew was on his mind too. I knew we had the same thoughts and feelings about it, but I discovered he had thoughts about it that I never would have imagined. I just simply didn’t think the same way at all and it allowed me into a part of him I didn’t know was right beside me all the time. I was so grateful that he invited me in and trusted me when he could have chosen not to.

I say all this to say, let’s all find a way to reassure someone today.

Whether it’s by opening up a conversation and discovering what they are struggling with.

Or offering a smile to someone who might seem like they aren’t paying attention (maybe their mind is so busy.)

Or sending someone some love in their love language just to let them know you care about them and how they’re doing.

Let’s make love our true north.

Let’s make connection a priority.

Let’s make empathy great again.
