When I wake up in the middle of the night

and the glow from the moon lies over you with the softness of a gentle blanket

I watch over you with gratitude.

I catch your breaths

one by one

as I breathe them in

and keep them for myself

swirling around inside me all mixed up with my own.

I feel your heartbeat

and then notice it in the pulse of your neck as I listen closely for your dreams.

I whisper thank-yous that you never hear

for your love

for your life

for existing

with me.
